Koalas are often referred to as "koala bears," but this is a mistake, as they are more closely related to kangaroos and possums than to true bears. There is only one species of koala in the world. Koalas are classified as marsupials. This is a different group of mammals, where females have a special pouch for rearing their young. Their young are not born completely grown yet, and they develop further in the safety of a pouch. So, it is incorrect to call them "koala bears" — their correct name is simply "koalas."

B.

The word "koala" is thought to come from one of the Australian Aboriginal languages, Dharug, which roughly translates to "no drink" or "no water." And this can be easily explained. In the Australian forest, koalas rarely drink water, as the majority of their water intake comes from eating fresh eucalyptus leaves. In the wild, it is nearly impossible to see koalas drinking water. However, they can drink if necessary, such as in times of drought, heat waves or bushfires — when the leaves may not contain enough moisture.

C.

70% of Australia is dry land, since the continent receives very little rain. Therefore, most of the country's unique wildlife, including koalas, has had to adapt to living in dry environments. Even though koalas do not need a lot of water, they do need eucalyptus trees, which grow only in Australia. Koalas also live only in Australia. They can be found in the southeast and eastern parts of the country. They live in forests, inland areas, and open woodlands — close to water sources such as streams and small rivers.

D.

Koalas may sleep for up to 18-20 hours every day, sitting safely in tree branches. Koalas are mostly nocturnal, yet they sleep for part of the night and only sometimes move about in the daytime. Their extraordinary sleeping habit is believed to be an adaptation to their leaf-based diet, as they get little energy from eating leaves. Therefore, koalas need more inactive periods than most mammals to conserve their energy in dry environments such as the Australian forest. Sleeping is certainly the best way to conserve energy.

E.

Koalas are not social animals, preferring to live alone in the wild. Once young koalas become fully mature, they usually look for a new territory away from home and live in trees — with minimal social interaction. However, their home range can largely overlap with other koalas. So it is not rare to spot some animals together. While koalas are territorial mammals, they will tolerate other members of the same species during the breeding season. Apart from that, they do not normally visit another koala's home trees.

F.

There are over 700 varieties of eucalyptus trees. Koalas eat only some of these. They are very fussy eaters and have strong preferences for different types of eucalyptus or gum leaves. The koala's digestive system is particularly good at tolerating eucalyptus leaves, which, even in small amounts, can often be poisonous and fatal to most animals. An adult koala can easily eat from half a kilogram to nearly one kilogram of such leaves each night, depending on its size and where the koala lives.

G.

Habitat loss is the greatest threat to koalas. The main reasons for this are land clearing, bushfires, and diseases of eucalyptus trees. Bushfires are quite common in the Australian outback, but as climate changes, more frequent and intense fires happen, and they pose an increasing threat to koalas. The Australian Koala Foundation states that there are less than 60,000 koalas left in Australia today, and it could be as low as 33,000. Much of their habitat has already been lost. This makes it very important to save what is left.

Public speaking fear Snakes? Fine. Flying? No problem. Public speaking? Yikes! Just thinking about public speaking - routinely described as one of the greatest (and most common) fears - can make your palms sweat. However, there are many ways to tackle this anxiety and learn to deliver a memorable speech. Here, I'm providing you with public speaking tips that will help reduce your anxiety, dispel myths, and improve your performance. To start with, nervousness is normal. Practise and prepare! All people feel some physiological reactions like pounding hearts or trembling hands. Do not associate these feelings with the sense that you will perform poorly or make a fool of yourself. Some nerves are good. The adrenaline rush that makes you sweat also makes you more alert and ready to give your best performance. The best way to overcome anxiety is to prepare, prepare, and prepare some more. Take the time to go over your notes several times. Once you have become comfortable with the material, practise - a lot. Videotape yourself, or get a friend to critique your performance. Next, know your audience. Your speech is about them, not you. Before you begin to craft your message, consider who the message is intended for. Learn as much about your listeners as you can. This will help you determine your choice of words, level of information, organization pattern, and motivational statement. Also, organize your material in the most effective manner to attain your purpose. Create the framework for your speech. Write down the topic, general purpose, specific purpose, central idea, and main points. Make sure to grab the audience's attention in the first 30 seconds. Then, watch for feedback and adapt to it. Keep your focus on the audience. Gauge their reactions, adjust your message, and stay flexible. Delivering a canned speech will guarantee that you lose the attention of or confuse even the most devoted listeners. It's also really important to let your personality come through. Be yourself, don't become a talking head - in any type of communication. You will establish better credibility if your personality shines through, and your audience will trust what you have to say if they can see you as a real person. You can use humour, tell stories, and use effective language as well. Inject a funny anecdote in your presentation, and you will certainly grab your audience's attention. Audiences generally like a personal touch in a speech. A story can provide that. A very common mistake is to read the material. Don't read it unless you have to, just work from an outline. Reading from a script or slide fractures the interpersonal connection. By maintaining eye contact with the audience, you keep the focus on yourself and your message. A brief outline can serve to jog your memory and keep you on task. Remember that non-verbals are as important as what you're saying, so use your voice and hands effectively, and omit nervous gestures. Non-verbal communication carries most of the message. Good delivery does not call attention to itself, but instead conveys the speaker's ideas clearly and without distraction. Finally, use audio-visual aids wisely. Too many can break the direct connection to the audience, so use them sparingly. They should enhance or clarify your content, or capture and maintain your audience's attention. To sum up, practice does not make perfect - as good communication is never perfect, and nobody expects you to be perfect. However, putting in the requisite time to prepare will help you deliver a better speech. You may not be able to shake your nerves entirely, but you can learn to minimize them.
