It's hard to believe, but first orchestras had no conductors. One of the musicians ran the performance, though sometimes it was misleading and indistinct. The rules were changed by German composer Richard Wagner, who was convinced that an orchestra needed a leader, and thus he became the first conductor in history. A conductor gives instructions for the placement of musicians on the stage, shows the rhythm and the pitch of sounds.

B.

Orchestras perform a wide range of musical genres. They may differ in the number of musicians, but, more importantly, they can use different types of musical instruments. There are symphonic orchestras, which are also called philharmonic ones, where you can see all sorts of instruments. In string orchestras, instruments like violins, cellos and double basses lead. In brass bands, the brass instruments like horns, trumpets and trombones play the main parts.

C.

To be seen from any part of the stage or orchestra pit, the conductor always stands in front of the orchestra. The musicians are grouped around him according to their instruments. Richard Wagner preferred violins to sit in the right and left sectors, divided by flutes and horns. It is called the German arrangement. In Russian orchestras, all violins are at the front, next to the footlights, and the drums are at the back.

D.

Since ancient times, people have enjoyed playing musical instruments, individually or in groups. The conception of the orchestra, however, appeared much later, more than 400 years ago, in the 17th century. Originally, the word orchestra denoted not a group of musicians but a round stage for performers in the ancient theatre. The musicians may play directly from the stage or from the orchestra pit, which makes them almost invisible to the audience.

E.

You have probably heard about the orchestra from Vienna, which plays the instruments made from different vegetables — pumpkins, cucumbers, carrots, and even peppers. The orchestra has given more than 300 concerts! Before the performance, the musicians of that orchestra make new instruments from raw or dried vegetables. After the concert, the vegetables are cooked for the audience. That looks like fun, doesn't it?

F.

Tuning the instruments before the concert is the procedure no orchestra can ignore. Every musician takes the standard A note on it. As they do it without the conductor's command, the tuning sound may seem chaotic, but this does not mean that the orchestra cannot play well. It is a necessary step to make sure that they will produce pure sound during the concert.

Earl Mikhail Vorontsov
Vorontsov is a popular Russian surname that dates back to 1000 A.D. Its genealogy
is hard to trace as most archives were lost. What is known is that in the 17th century,
the surname was in the list of Russian noble families. The Vorontsovs were diplomats,
generals, and civil servants at the court.
Earl Mikhail Vorontsov was one of the most remarkable people in Russian history.
He was born in 1782 in St. Petersburg to a noble family. A couple of years later,
Mikhail’s family moved to London due to his father’s diplomatic career. When the
mother died, the father had to raise his young children alone. He was interested in
new progressive pedagogical tendencies and brought up his children accordingly. For
Mikhail, the father chose teachers who shared his vision.
As a result, at the age of 18, Mikhail Vorontsov could boast an excellent education.
He could speak several foreign languages, knew military science, Russian history and
literature. Also, he learnt woodwork, so carpentry became his lifelong hobby. Mikhail
was curious and hard-working and, like his father, believed that only educated people
could make a strong state.
In 1801, he arrived in St. Petersburg to become an army officer. Life in the capital,
however, bored him, and he joined the war in the Caucasus. During his military
career, Mikhail Vorontsov won a few important battles. He commanded Russian troops
that beat Napoleon and reached Paris in 1812. The victories became possible due to
his knowledge of tactics, personal courage and respect for soldiers and officers.
At the battle of Borodino, Mikhail Vorontsov was seriously injured and transported
to Moscow. As the city hospitals were full, he had to go to his own estate near
Vladimir. He also brought about three hundred wounded soldiers and fifty officers to
his estate. Vorontsov provided them with food and medical care. When it was time to
return to the war, they got new uniforms and bonuses.
After the war, Mikhail Vorontsov was appointed the governor general of the
southern region of Novorossiya, and he did a lot for the development of the region.
During his governance, a few convenient roads appeared in the Crimea and new
wineries were started. The reforms went along with the growth of traditional
industries. For example, Mikhail Vorontsov bought elite sheep abroad to support local
wool production.
Mikhail Vorontsov did a lot to support the rich and diverse culture of the region.
He also opened new schools and colleges for students of different nationalities who
lived there. The young people studied languages, crafts and navigation. The progressive
achievements were commemorated in numerous monuments to Mikhail Vorontsov in
the region.
