The Discovery of America

While Christopher Columbus is often credited with discovering America in 1492, it’s essential to know that he was not the first person to set foot on this vast land. In fact, there lived people known as the Native Americans, who had their own unique languages, traditions and ways of life. Long before the ships sailed across the Atlantic Ocean, these early inhabitants developed the land and its waterways.

As Columbus and his crew made their way to the New World, they were seeking a faster route to Asia. With three ships — the Niña, the Pinta and the Santa María — Columbus and his crew faced the strong winds and gigantic waves of the Atlantic, driven by the hope of adventure and discovery. After weeks of sailing, they finally spotted land. As Columbus and his crew stepped onto the shores of what we now call America, they were greeted by beautiful landscapes and the sounds of birds singing in the trees. Columbus and his men met the native peoples who already lived there. These first contacts were filled with both wonder and miscommunication. As Columbus believed he had found a new route to India, so he called the people he met “Indians”.
